BARRX Medical has developed a device, a radio frequency balloon that kills bad tissue and allows good tissue to grow back. A doctor can adjust the amount that the balloon expands in a patient’s throat to treat the affected area of the esophagus. BARRX, based in Sunnyvale, Calif., aims to make this treatment easier and profitable for doctors. Gastrointestinal Reflux Disease, a condition where stomach acid enters the esophagus, is a serious problem. In addition to causing pain and discomfort, the cells that line the throat can be damaged to the point of becoming pre-cancerous. This condition, known as Barrett’s Esophageal Syndrome, has typically been treated in the past by a doctor painstakingly destroying the affected cells a few at a time with a probe. BARRX, based in Sunnyvale, Calif., aims to make this treatment easier and profitable for doctors.
