now that other applications have picked up facebook chat, do you still see digsby at the top of its competition

So far as I know, Digsby's the only one with facebook wall integration. So I think it's still tops of competition.

the only thing that might sway me from digsby is the fact that Trillian has Norton security integration - but Tril is by no means as broad ranged as digsby for what i use it for
  •

    08/15/2008

    steverestless

re:overheal's comment Norton's security abilities are somewhat questionable, and any good antivirus's active scanner ought to take care of anything that tries to get in via IM. If thats all the appeal trillian holds for you, I'd say stick with digsby.

Skype is not possible. Skype is proprietary and requires an encryption key that they will *not* give up.

I love Digsby. One small improvement is that when I want block a spam IM, I never feel confident that their method is actually doing it even though it may be. The blockers on the orginal applications feel stronger.

Some may look at "Amazing bug response" as odd. Don't forget, that since the last major update, the Digsby crew have been slaving over a major refresh of the code which will bring about many memory optimizations amongst other features. As well, many bugs that were present before they set out to accomplish this feat will have been dealt with by one of the next major updates are released. Otherwise, dotSyntax strives to push out weekly or bi-weekly bug fixes, if not sooner (depending on severity).

The Linux and Mac versions will be released soon after the Windows version has reached a point in its' development where it has the stability and speed as well as the functions and protocols that both the development team and the user base desire. Once that is achieved, then the Mac/Linux versions will certainly follow closely.

Of course *you* would. Most people wouldn't, when you can get 90% of the IM features in an OSS application. The market for a paid IM client is small and shrinking. If Digsby went OSS and found a way to integrate search as a revenue stream (a la Firefox)... then maybe they could have a business.
  •

    08/15/2008

To be honest, I never use the Firefox search bar. And I never click on Google Ads. So I find it hard to understand how there are actually people clicking on them and earning companies money.

It doesn't matter if you use it. That's how Firefox makes money. Google pays them to integrate Google Search into their browser.

Actually, according to several reports, Firefox makes money when searches are made, not just from integrating it with google tech. Google has to get searches before it will part with revenue.

If you love a program and intend to keep using it, something as trivial as $20 is nothing compared to the enjoyment of a solid program with a growing reputation for good. Besides, there are people out there who spend even more on things they use only once, so $20 for repeated uses is worth it.

@drmanhattan: Digsby apparently is making the attempt to find alternate ways through link ads (like the amazon one) to make profits..why would they do this and charge for the app? You deal with ads everywhere else. Its a fact of our money driven world. Get over it.

On another note, regardless of how things work out in the end, the dotSyntax guys have pledged that there will always be a free version.

On principle, I do not pay for something I can get for free. I'll never upgrade to Flickr Pro or pay for more storage at Box.net, for example. I don't mind seeing ads, but if they ever did start charging (and it sounds like there will always be a free version ), it is possible that I would either find a free alternative or just stick with the free version (as long as it still met my multi-protocol chatting needs).

I think, should Digsby added Spyke, it will be number 1 to all network users around the globe.

I can't think of any IM system that does this yet (besides Skype itself). Even so, its no reason for a Bear vote (IMHO). But yes I hope they add the same.

    Doesn't seem mature yet.

It's about as mature as anything else out there, and about as mature as it will ever be. It's an IM client. What do you want it to do? Write your messages for you?
