Introducing computer science to the age-old art of dry stone wall building, Intresto is developing software to mimic the way a stone mason fits irregular-shaped rocks together to form a regular structure.

Intresto is an early-stage self-funded start-up based in Sydney. Our aim is to use computational power rather than industrial power to aid in the building of durable structures from local raw material.

Intresto is developing Rocksolver software to fit a collection of irregular polyhedra to each other and into a regular shape according to structural stability criteria. Combined with 3D scanning technology the software will aid in the construction of roads, ports, land stabilisation structures and housing. The production of the building material, rock rubble, results in about 1/10 the greenhouse gas emissions as dimension stone, concrete or brick, hence Intresto's R&D Rocksolver project. Prototype software and scanner will be ready for testing later in 2008.«Less
