| Description: | What is Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery? In order to properly define and explain these two phrases, we must first define a disaster. To start with, a disaster can be either natural or man-made. A natural disaster falls into the realm of weather related such as storms, severe weather, flooding, or anything considered an ‘act of God.’ The second is man-made which is considered hardware failure, infrastructure failure such as power or communications, or a software related failure including viruses, operating system failures, etc. Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery have many connotations in the business world, so we will dispel the confusion here. Simply stated, Business Continuity (BC) is the ability, or systems in place to allow the ability, for your company to continue basic business functions in the event of a disaster. These functions include providing customer assistance, performing financial functions, and management of human resources. Disaster Recovery (DR) is the processes, facilities, and methods used to recover fully from a disaster while still providing business services. SAS-70 Highlights What is SAS-70 and how does it affect me? Basically, SAS-70 is the regulations and guidelines outlined in the legislative act termed as the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002. The key components of this legislative act are reporting and responsibilities for all businesses, internal business process controls, and protection of data as it relates to security and availability. This legislative act applies to all companies, big or small, public or private.
