While enormous advances have occurred in networking, mobile telephony and radios, the primary applications that run on them are essentially unchanged. From a user standpoint, a push-to-talk radio still works exactly the same way that it did when it was first invented. Other than being mobile, a cell phone call is similar to every phone call since the telephone was invented. Even VoIP systems are made to act exactly the same way as a traditional telephone from the user's point of view.
