Joe is a world leading expert in the design, construction and operation of processes and systems for algal culture. During his career, Joe has overseen the use of algae for applications including the production of nutraceuticals, nitrogen fixation and heavy metal removal from industrial waste waters, shellfish aquaculture, municipal waste water treatment, and carbon sequestration.

His research has also focused on the use of algae for biofuel production. Notably, Joe was actively involved in the Aquatic Species Program (ASP), the DOE and NREL (formerly SERI) effort to develop algae-to-biofuel technology. In 1987, he was awarded the contract to build and operate the ASP's large-scale demonstration ponds in Roswell, New Mexico.

Joe holds a PhD in Biophysics and an MS in Mechanical Engineering from UC Berkeley, and an AB in Physics from Cornell.
