Michael Banks

Michael Banks has 17 years of experience as an entrepreneur, strategic consultant and venture capitalist working in the technology industry.

Prior to joining the D.E. Shaw group in 2007, where he also serves as an executive of the venture capital unit, Banks was a managing director of Palisades Ventures, a Los Angeles-based venture capital fund. From 2001 to 2003, he was a managing director of Steamboat Ventures, the venture capital arm of The Walt Disney Company.

Before that, Banks spent four years as a managing director of Intel Capital, the venture capital unit of Intel Corporation, where he first managed a team of more than 20 investment professionals focused on investments in emerging technologies in the broadband, media and communications sectors. At Intel, he subsequently was responsible for managing e-business and infrastructure investments in Latin America.

From 1994 to 1995, Banks was a vice president of Stanford Consulting Group, Inc., where he specialized in intellectual property consulting for technology companies. Prior to 1994, he held various management positions with LECG (Law and Economics Consulting Group) and Cornerstone Research.

Banks received a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science and a Master of Arts degree in international policy studies from Stanford University, and an M.B.A. from UCLA Anderson School of Management.
