Wade Smith
Wade is currently Professor of Neurology, Director of the Neurological Intensive Care Unit and Director of the Neurovascular Service at the University of California, San Francisco Medical Center. He was the national- and then international- principle investigator for the MERCI and Multi MERCI stroke trials that led directly to FDA clearance of the first 4 medical devices approved for use in human stroke. He is nationally recognized medical educator and recipient of multiple UCSF teaching awards. He is a founding member of the UCSF Academy of Medical Educators. He serves on the editorial boards of the journal Neurocritical Care and the American Journal of Neuroradiology. Wade has published over 70 peer-reviewed scientific manuscripts and is author of the chapter on Stroke in Harrisons Principals of Medicine - the most widely read reference on stroke. He wrote the first and second generation UCSF medical school curriculum database platform that UCSF medical students currently use today. Wade has been named as one San Francisco Bay Area’s Best Doctors for several years running. He is a scientific advisor for Radiant Medical Systems (endovascular hypothermia), OrNim, Inc (transcranial oxymetry), and BrainsGate (sphenopalatine ganglion stimulator), and has advised multiple pharmaceutical companies including Renovis, Inc. Dr. Smith obtained his bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Washington in 1982. He received his M.D. and a Ph.D. in Neurophysiology also at the University of Washington in 1989.
